Tetris — Play Free Online

Classic

Tetris is the classic falling-block puzzle: rotate and place seven kinds of pieces to complete lines, clearing the stack before it reaches the top.

About Tetris

Tetris is the puzzle game everything else gets compared to. Pieces made of four squares fall one at a time. You move and rotate each one so that it fits the pile below, and any full horizontal line vanishes, scoring points and making room. The pile grows faster as the level rises, and the game ends when new pieces have nowhere to spawn.

This browser version keeps the essentials: the seven standard pieces, a preview of the next piece, a hold slot, hard drop and a rising speed curve. It is simple to start and endlessly deep, which is why it has survived for decades.

How to Play Tetris

  1. Watch the falling piece and the next-piece preview.
  2. Move the piece left or right and rotate it to fit the stack.
  3. Complete full lines to clear them; four at once is a Tetris.
  4. Keep the stack low and play as long as you can.

Controls

  • Left and right arrow keys: move.
  • Up arrow: rotate. Some versions also use Z and X.
  • Down arrow: soft drop. Space: hard drop.
  • C or Shift: hold the current piece.

Tips and Tricks

  • Keep the stack flat and leave one column open for the long I piece.
  • Use the hold slot to save an I piece for a four-line clear.
  • Do not bury holes. One covered gap costs more than a slow placement.
  • Look at the next piece before you decide where the current one goes.

Tetris FAQ

How do you score a Tetris?

Clear four lines with a single vertical I piece. It is worth far more than four separate single-line clears.

Does the game get faster?

Yes. Every ten lines raises the level, and pieces fall faster.

Can I play with a touchscreen?

Yes, with on-screen buttons, although a keyboard is more precise.
